The Communications & Advocacy Section is responsible for proactively advancing the strategic positioning of UN Women and its mandate through effective outreach through its strategic communications capacity and function.  It is at the forefront of UN Women’s work to change attitudes and promote gender equality through all forms of media, to build UN Women’s brand and influence and disseminate its messages.

Under the guidance of Director of Strategic Partnerships Division and supervision of the Chief – Communications and Advocacy, the Deputy Chief – Communications and Advocacy is responsible for providing high level- strategic advice to the Chief and the organization, managing UN Women’s media outreach, managing technical communication and advocacy support to regional offices and country offices, with a focus on media outreach, web editorial and social media.

NOTE: The duration of the assignment is until 30 April 2022. Whereas an external candidate will be offered a temporary appointment, subject to release agreements, staff members in UN Women may be administered as a temporary assignment and staff members in the UN Common system may be administered under a loan arrangement.

 

Deberes y responsabilidades

Provide high-level strategic support and advice to the Chief – Communications and Advocacy:

  • Provide substantive input to the development and implementation of the communications and advocacy section workplan in line with UN Women’s Strategic Plan.
  • Coordinate development and monitoring of the annual workplan and budget for the section for the Chief’s review and approval.
  • Develop Communications and Advocacy reports and provide inputs to UN Women reports.
  • In support of the Chief, serve as Officer-in-Charge of the Section, supervising all communications portfolios and administrative tasks, as and when needed.

Under the supervision of the Chief, manage and direct the media, web editorial and social media teams and outreach for UN Women:

  • Develop the global media and social outreach strategy for UN Women for approval by the Chief Communications and Advocacy.
  • Manage and oversee the implementation of UN Women’s global media, web editorial and social media outreach strategy.
  • Work with the Executive Directors Office to coordinate and drive corporate media activities and coverage as well as the (social) media activities for the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Manage the development and dissemination of UN Women global coverage of programmatic and thematic priorities, impacts and results.
  • Oversee and manage communication and media support for high level activities and events, including for UN Women Goodwill Ambassadors.

Coordinate Headquarters communication and advocacy support to regional offices and country offices focusing on media outreach, in close consultation with the Chief:

  • Ensure that global communication as well as advocacy initiatives from different offices in headquarters, regional offices, and country offices are aligned with corporate priorities and give guidance as needed.
  • Oversee the development of guidance and templates for media outreach by offices and oversee the monitoring of implementation and all organizational levels.
  • Support ROs in identifying and filling capacity needs to ensure ROs are able to deliver communications and advocacy results.

Manage partnerships with media alliances:

  • Manage and develop partnerships with media outlets and networks including through coordination of relationship management at different points in the organisation.
  • Promote the exploration and where appropriate use of new and innovative communication tools and platforms.
  • Build capacity of personnel in UN Women in relation to media, web and social media  partnerships.

Manage the production of editorial content for) media outreach:

  • Ensure quality of production of wide range of communication materials.
  • Introduce new methods for media, social media and web outreach.
  • Manage the production of communication materials for UN Women, including press releases, media advisories, news briefs, fact sheets, videos.

Manage the work of the Media, Social Media and Web-Editorial Teams:

  • Manage the performance of personnel under supervision.
  • Provide performance feedback and coaching to personnel under supervision, ensure performance assessment are implemented on time and ensure personnel are fully aware of UN Women accountability frameworks and workplace relations policies.

Other duties as required:

  • Perform other duties as required by the Chief.
  • Act as OIC and supervise other personnel, as needed.

The Deputy Chief of Communications & Advocacy is a key function in supporting the Chief of the Section to ensure successful positioning of UN Women and its mandate to external audiences.

  • Implementation of section’s annual work plan on time, on scope, on budget;
  • High quality advice provided to the Chief in the implementation of event-specific, integrated communications strategies to advance UN Women’s advocacy and position the organization;
  • Successful partnership management in the area of communications and advocacy;
  • UN Women visibility in mainstream media;
  • UN Women web and social media reach.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

  • Masters degree (or equivalent in communication, international development, public relations journalism, social studies, media studies or related fields;
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • At least 10 years of experience in communications and media relations;
  • Experience managing partnerships with traditional and new media;
  • Strong experience managing a multi-cultural team.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of other UN official language is an asset.
