Background

NOTE: The duration of the assignment is for 6 months. Whereas an external candidate will be offered a temporary appointment, subject to release agreements, staff members in UN Women may be administered as a temporary assignment and staff members in the UN Common system may be administered under a loan arrangement.

Part of the Strategic Partnerships Division, the Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships and Advisory Services Section (MPAS) brings together UN Women’s multi-stakeholder initiatives through various partnership engagement. It convenes Corporations and Foundations, HeForShe, Individual, Digital and Public Giving, the Unstereotype Alliance and the Women’s Empowerment Principles |WE EMPOWER-G7 and seeks to ensure that these are complementary and synergistic. MPAS is the driver of UN Women’s corporate engagement with the private sector both in terms of substantive partnership and resource mobilization, as well as leveraging the range of UN Women’s partnership vehicles and its National Committees to achieve maximum impact for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

MPAS is responsible for bringing coherence to UN Women’s various interactions with private actors, including business, philanthropy and individual supporters.  It leverages the complementarity between different partnership vehicles to enable the fullest possible partnerships to support UN Women’s mandate and the objectives of the new Strategic Plan 2022 -2025.

The Partnerships Development  Specialist will report directly to the Chief of MPAS and work in close coordination with the Private Partnerships team and colleagues across all MPAS Teams to provide guidance on partner and donor acquisition, building partnerships, and advising on the development of resource mobilization plans in line with MPAS’s resource mobilization targets to ensure delivery of UN Women’s goals and financial results. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Design, Develop and oversee the implementation of  resource mobilization and advocacy strategies for private sector partnerships under the umbrella of Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships and Advisory Services Section MPAS led global initiatives:

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of differentiated, donor fund-raising and “friend-raising” strategies and activities, aligned and intersected with strategies of all MPAS led global initiatives: HeforShe, WEPS, WEA and UA and in line with UN Women Strategic Plan 2022-2025;
  • Oversee relevant private sector partnership portfolio, agreements, engagement and activities;
  • Oversee the development of targeted advocacy and communications materials and products to mobilize new partnerships and attract additional donors’ funding;
  • Provide technical support to the development of project proposals in line with UN Women’s Strategic Plan 2022-2025 as well as the interest of donors;
  • Identify new opportunities to secure additional non-core resources and subsequent activities;
  • Review and evaluate proposals to donors and partners;
  • Oversee ad-hoc donor studies, research, and other activities to identify funding opportunities; update the resources mobilization strategy as needs emerge.

Build trust and maintain effective relationships with donors and partners across MPAS led initiatives:

  • Build and maintain direct and effective relationships with new strategic prospects to foster wider social impact and drive new fundraising opportunities from private sector;
  • Determine the partnerships landscape to ensure optimal win-win partnerships for UN Women;
  • Identify and mobilize key strategic partnerships to enhance impact and influence for UN Women’s strategic priorities;
  • Act as a direct entry point for private sector donors, building institutional relationships.

Oversee knowledge building and sharing and advocacy efforts:

  • Oversee the development of knowledge products across MPAS led initiatives to effectively position UN Women and its work/impact with private sector partners;
  • Share knowledge and enhance organizational learning in UN Women through the development and use of on-line tools, templates, tips, mechanisms and guidelines;
  • Monitor emerging issues that could affect partnerships and resource contributions (risk management).

Provide advisory and specialized strategic guidance to the Chief of MPAS:

  • Act as a key resource of real-time partner intelligence for Chief of MPAS and UN Women’s senior management;
  • Advise, guide, and provide substantive inputs to the MPAS resource mobilization strategies;
  • Prepare high-level documents, talking points, briefs and other strategic papers/materials as and when requested;
  • Review regularly the annual work plan, deliverables and relevant budget/s and make recommendation/s to ensure its successful delivery.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in business management, project management, public administration, social science, or other related areas is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A Portfolio Management related certification (Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP)® or Management of Portfolios (MoP®) is an asset.

Experience: 

  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible partnership development experience that combines policy and resource mobilization leadership in the area of gender equality, at the international level, preferably within the UN system, Agencies, Funds and Programs.
  • Experience building, maintaining and managing  relationships with strategic partners, governmental institutions and non-profit organizations.
  • Experience operating within cross-functional teams and effectively assessing and balancing cross-functional issues or risks.
  • Experience in resource mobilization for gender equality programmes is requirement.
  • Experience in leading a team is an asset.

Languages: 

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Working knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
