Background

Achieving and maintaining a balance between economic development and environmental management and conservation is essential for the realization of the country’s poverty reduction and long-term development goals.

Jordan is a signatory to many major global environmental conventions and has started putting in place mechanisms to support their implementation.  Nevertheless, being a semi-arid country with limited natural resources and a growing population, Jordan is confronted with the typical problems that arise from rapid urbanizations, industrialization and depletion of resources.  Furthermore, the country is totally reliant on imports to meet its household and industrial energy requirements.

The UNDP Environment, DRR, and Climate Change programme runs a number of projects in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment that focus on support to the government of Jordan in relation to mitigation and adaptation to climate change, biodiversity conservation, and waste management.

The Solid Waste Management programme intern is expected to support the Environment, DRR and Climate Change programme team with specific focus on Solid Waste Management programme. He/She will provide all necessary technical and administrative support and will support effective delivery of the activities within the SWM programme by supporting day-to-day projects’ implementation consistent with UNDP rules and regulations.

The objective of this assignment/internship opportunity is to increase youth participation and engagement in the implementation of environmental interventions namely in SWM  and contribute to address the challenges in that evolving sector.

This opportunity is provided by UNDP for youth to voice their ideas and serve their communities in the SWM sector.
