UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

 

UN Women has placed strategic emphasis on addressing racial justice at the intersection of gender equality.  Its Strategic Plan, both at its center and as a cross cutting dimension, highlights the importance of addressing inequalities and ensuring that no one is left behind.  This work is anchored on the broader human rights framework and in particular on CEDAW, CERD as well as the International Decade for People of African Descent.

 

The organization seeks a Racial Justice intern to support the work of the Racial Justice Specialist in their consultative work around developing an organizational and UN-wide intersectional approach to racial justice, and in particular structural racism; in their focus on the creative arts as a critical tool for changing the negative social norms and stereotypes which drive structural racism, and in the production of internal and externally facing events build multi-sectoral partnerships and to highlight and expand on these areas of work.

Duties and Responsibilities

Support the Racial Justice Specialist in the following areas:

 

  • Mapping, research, synthesis and finalization of policy brief(s) on intersectional racial justice and gender equality;

 

  • Contributing to discussions, outreach, research and planning toward operationalizing the development of an intersectional racial justice lens approach for UN Women.

 

  • developing internal and external social media content related to intersectional global racial and gender equality issues;

 

  • Participating in meetings and supporting action with partners and collaborators e.g. the UN Network on Racism and the Protection of Minorities, the Permanent Forum on PAD, the Working Group on PAD, UNESCO and its Global Forum on Racism, UNFPA, Global Department of Communications’ Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery, and other established and emerging partnerships both within and external to the UN System;

 

  • Assisting in the development of initiatives (including panels, other events and partnerships) covering the final year of the Decade for People of African Descent, UNGA79/Summit of the Future and CSW69/Beijing+30;
  • Placing special attention to initiatives that draw on the creative arts as a critical tool for changing the negative social norms and stereotypes which are key drivers of structural racism.

Qualifications

 

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: international development, political science, African Diaspora Studies, or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Meet one of the following:
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated degree and if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; or
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

 

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

 

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
