Background

The Volunteer Knowledge and Innovation Section (VKIS) is responsible for advancing the understanding of the value, and strengthen the contribution, of volunteerism to sustainable development as well as to enhance UNV’s proactive capacity to mainstream volunteerism into peace and development initiatives through:

  • Strengthening the knowledge base on volunteerism through deepening research, measurement and convening volunteer involving organizations (VIOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs), as a means to convert this knowledge into policy and practice thereby contribution to an enabling environment for volunteerism;
  • Leading and promoting the production of the State of the World’s Volunteerism Report as a flagship report for showcasing the contribution of volunteerism to peace and development;
  • Building the capacity of UN Volunteers and UNV personnel to optimize the impact of volunteers and volunteerism;
  • Fostering innovation in UNV’s contribution to volunteerism, drawing upon good practices and concrete results achieved in the field and stimulating ideas for new approaches to volunteerism emerging from within and beyond UNV;
  • Positioning volunteerism as a credible solution for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Reporting to the Programme Manager (Online Volunteering), the Programme Associate supports the formulation and implementation of the Online Volunteering promotion and advocacy materials and campaigns.  She/he also supports the management of community engagement activities.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Contribute to the development and implementation of advocacy activities

  • Contribute to the formulation and implementation of advocacy campaigns at global and local levels;
  • Coordinate the administration of the Online Volunteering Award campaign;
  • Support the planning and management of outreach campaigns as well as public relations events and provide logistics support to the events;
  • Conduct periodic webinars for various target groups;
  • Contribute to the development of learning contents on online volunteering and support trainings and workshops as relevant.

Collaborate in the development of communication materials and tools

  • Support the development and design of communication materials (e.g. leaflets, videos), in coordination with the Communication Section;
  • Coordinate the editing and translation of online volunteering information;
  • Coordinate the printing and dissemination of promotional materials;
  • Support the UNV Field Units in their communication and awareness raising campaigns related to online volunteering;
  • Support improvements of web performance in coordination with the Information and Communication Technology Section.

Support the management of community engagement activities

  • Identify entry points for integrating online volunteering into service users and partners activities, in the area of peace and development programming and global debate;
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Programming and Management Group and the Communications Section  in the development of briefing products to illustrate substantive entry points for online volunteering;
  • Review data and identify results on online volunteering, in collaboration with the Results Management Support Section, to  anchor outreach and engagement in substantive issues.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Secondary education, preferably with specialized certification in communications or design;
  • University degree in Design, Communications or Journalism is desirable but is not a requirement.

Experience:

  • 6 years of relevant administrative work experience in communication or design is required;
  • Experience in managing volunteers in a developing context is an asset;
  • Work experience in the private sector is an asset;
  • Experience in using web-based management systems and in working remotely is desirable.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Working knowledge of French or Spanish.

Other:

  • Computer skills in offices software packages and in graphic design software is required.
