Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 170 countries and territories, working with governments and people on their own solutions to global and national development challenges to help empower lives and build resilient nations.

Being LGBTI in Asia (BLIA) is a regional programme which aims to reduce marginalization and exclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. Initiated in 2012, the programme addresses inequality, violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status, and promotes universal access to health and social services.

The research currently being conducted under the programme aims to identify and analyse key issues affecting the health, rights and well-being of LGBTI in Asia.  UNDP works with government, academic and research institutions and civil society to ensure the findings and recommendations of the programme’s research projects are relevant and owned by national stakeholders.
