Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. UN Women is also increasing its engagement in humanitarian response through interagency collaboration.

 

In the framework of the Syrian humanitarian response in Jordan, UN Women works at multiple levels to respond to the specific needs of Syrian Women Refugees and communities for livelihood support, building on their own initiatives and skills as well as addressing vulnerabilities as identified by themselves in their women centers. UN Women is implementing a multi-sectorial protection and support project in Za’atari and Azraq  Refugee Camps through the creation of Women and Girls ‘ safe spaces’ called Oasis.   The overall goal of the project is to empower vulnerable Syrian women refugees through increased access to self-reliance opportunities and meaningful engagement in community life to put in place the foundational cornerstones for increased self-reliance and durable solutions for the ‘day after’ in Syria.

 

The project pursue the following specific objectives: a) Create and sustain access to self-reliance opportunities for Syrian women refugees through cash for work activities b) Build a conducive environment for increasing Syrian women refugees’ active participation in decision making processes in the camps including meaningful engagement in community mobilizations efforts; c) Increase awareness on women rights and responsibilities for an inclusive, equitable and peaceful society through training, enhancement of life skills and other social cohesion approaches; this includes addressing prevention and response to gender based violence though awareness raising, trainings, and referrals to service providers of psychosocial, health, and legal services as appropriate.

 

UN Women is seeking multiple Senior Camp Assistants, experienced in refugee camps, for supporting the start-up of a new project component as well as the coordination at field level, to facilitate a smooth and effective implementation and ensure synergy, as well as to provide administrative and logistical support to the programme response to Syrian refugee crisis in Jordan.

 

The senior camp assistants will work under the supervision and guidance of the Field Officer and in collaboration with the other team members, in both Za’atari and Azraq. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee the day-to-day management of the UN managed centers. This includes:

  • Managing the weekly/monthly timetable of activities and sharing it widely with beneficiaries and partners;
  • Develop ideas and build relevant linkages to ensure sufficient relevant activities for women and girls at risk;
  • Ensuring the continuation of viable volunteer related opportunities in each center;
  • Overseeing the allocation of volunteer opportunities provided to Syrian refugees;
  • Review the existing strengths, gaps and opportunities and implement strategies to scale up and strengthen the work undertaken in each center;
  • Coordinate with other UN Women camp based staff to link center beneficiaries to other camp based initiatives, including those related to protection services and community mobilization;
  • Coordinate, liaise and offer operation support with identified implementing partner (responsible parties) to implement the relevant project component in the Oasis or provide other services to center beneficiaries (e.g. hygiene related awareness raising, rights related information, etc.);
  • Work with the UN Women protection focal point to maintain a function referral system in each center. This includes:
  • Providing on the spot referrals where the protection focal point is unavailable, as in line with internal UN Women guidance and the Jordan Interagency SOPs on protection referrals;
  • Undertaking protection related awareness raising in all centers.
  • Assist the Field Officer with following up on activities linked to the programme response to Syrian refugee crisis in Jordan;
  • Contribute significantly to the day to day operational and administrative tasks of the Centers based on delegation of roles /responsibilities;
  • Regularly participate and contribute to relevant interagency coordination spaces as requested;
  • Provide timely data collection for reporting purpose;
  • Participate in relevant trainings and workshops as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: University degree in women’s protection related activities, Social Sciences, Gender Equality, Human Rights, international development or other related field.

Experience: 

  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible for development of humanitarian programme and administrative experience is required at the national or international level.
  • Experience in project coordination.
  • Previous experience in working in a refugee camp is a strong asset.
  • Experience community mobilization, especially in mobilization of women and girls in challenging environment in context of forced displacements focusing on women and vulnerable households, especially women at risk, female headed households, people with disabilities;
  • Awareness of the Gender and GBV guidelines in humanitarian settings;
  • Understanding of principles of gender equality and women’s empowerment in humanitarian response;
  • Prior working experience with the UN will be highly considered;
  • Experience in financial management & ATLAS knowledge will be an added value;
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc).

Language: Fluent written and spoken English and Arabic.
