Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy Implementation:

  • Ensures implementation of communications programs to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing results. 
  • Contributes to the development and delivery of digital media strategies, particularly social media through competitive research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging and audience identification in line with the United Nations’ mandate and related communications strategies and policies
  • Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate digital media responses
  • Monitors, analyses and evaluates implementation and impact of the Mission’s social media presence
  • Keeps abreast of emerging trends and innovations in the digital media field and makes recommendations for new opportunities to expand or enhance the Mission’s social media presence
  • Provides detailed weekly and monthly reports and analysis using online monitoring tools


Outreach and Capacity Building:

  • Builds the online community through social media platforms 
  • Manages social media communication with supporters and interested parties on a daily basis, building relationships with existing supporters and influencers to build the UN missions’ brand
  • Monitors a range of external forums and social media and maintains UN presence in public dialogue where appropriate
  • Develops relationships with key partners to maximize visibility and traffic to UN platforms
  • Captures and analyzes appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices to support continuous improvement
  • Makes recommendations and provides technical advice to team members and other UN components on best practice in social media
  • Provides guidance to and may supervise junior staff.

Content creation and site management:

  • Generate, edit, publish and share daily content (text, images, video or HTML) that support and engages audiences in a meaningful way 
  • Manages UN digital/social media platforms including uploading audio and video; monitoring sites and moderating social media forums
  • Creates new content and sources content with public information colleagues and other UN components to ensure consistent messaging, quality control and a coherent user experience
  • Establishes and optimizes Mission’s webpages within each platform to increase the visibility of Mission’s social media content
  • Collaborates with other UN mission components and coordinates digital media content to ensure full coverage of the Mission’s activities
  • Advocates on key issues, responds to comments in a timely and appropriate manner, provides analysis on feedback and escalates any potential issues to senior management as necessary

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in informatique, Communication, or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in French and English are required; Haitian Creole will be an asset.
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Note:

In July 2010, the United nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment

UN Women Internship Policy:

1) Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b)    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or  equivalent);

(c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year.

2) UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

3) All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;

4) UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

5) The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

6) Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;

7) The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
