UN Women Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background

The Republic of Serbia is a signatory to a number of important international treaties, which guarantee the equality of men and women and prohibit gender-based discrimination, most notably the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Istanbul Convention. National commitments on gender equality are in place, such as the National Strategy and Action Plan for Gender Equality and the Gender Equality Law. Despite the existing legal and policy framework, gender inequalities are prominent in Serbia and present in all spheres of life, in access to resources, in participation to decision-making processes and in interpersonal relations.

In the period 2015-2018, UN Women programme office in Serbia is committed to work towards selected development results in the impact areas of: women’s economic empowerment, combating violence against women, supporting the women, peace and security agenda and enhancing gender responsive policy making and budgeting. The Development Results Framework (DRF) for Serbia will be implemented in the framework of the Strategic Plan for Europe and Central Asia 2015-2018 of the UN Women Regional Office in Istanbul, Turkey.

UN Women is working with different national and UN partners, in the framework of several projects. UN Women In 2018, the UN Women Serbia will prioritize work under the Strategic Plan Outcome 2: Women lead, participate in and benefit equally from governance system, which present the continuation and scaling up of the previous work on gender responsive governance and gender mainstreaming of plans, strategies, policies, and budgets. The work will focus on enabling Government to ensure gender responsive planning and budgeting in parallel to capacity development of government institutions to promote and lead gender mainstreaming. Furthermore, Serbia Programme Office will continue initiatives under the Strategic Plan Outcome 4: All women and girls live free from all forms of violence, through the implementation of the regional initiative on combating violence against women and through the UN Joint Project on Integrated Response to Violence against Women. UN Women Serbia, will work on enhanced coordination, coherence and accountability of the UN system for commitments to gender equality and women's empowerment.

UN Women Serbia will continue partnership with the Coordination Body on Gender Equality, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Social and Veterans Affairs, the Ministry of European Integration and the Provincial Secretariat for Economy, Employment and Gender Equality.

UN Women is looking for an Intern to support programme activities in Serbia in a variety of fields. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Gender Specialist, the intern will be have the opportunity to get engaged on the following assignments:

  • Supporting research on different topics in the field of gender equality that would support the work of UN Women and its partners;
  • Collecting data and other statistics on relevance for UN Women programming and drafting briefs, overviews and reports in specific areas;
  • Supporting the organization of activities implemented by UN Women or its partners, such as workshops, trainings, coordination meetings, media events, etc. Expected support will be in the form of:event organization and logistics; materials preparation and minute-taking as necessary; support to work of experts engaged for the activities, communicating and liaising with relevant stakeholders etc.;
  • Monitoring developments in the field of gender equality in Serbia and preparing regular updates for use by UN Women and its partners;
  • Coordinating, drafting inputs and ensuring regular updating of UN Women section on UN Serbia website, knowledge database and dissemination of relevant products and publications to partners.

The working hours of the intern will be flexible and mutually agreed upon with the UN Women Belgrade office.

The internship programme offers unique learning opportunities for interns, exposing them to the work of the United Nations at country level, and enriching their educational experience through practical work in an international organization, with a focus on gender equality.

Required Skills and Experience

Qualifications:

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in international development, social sciences, political sciences, communication, management or other similar subject at the university level;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Other skills / personal interests:

  • Full computer literacy with MS Word, Excel, Power Point;
  • Commitment, interest, and knowledge in the area of women’s right and gender equality;
  • Strong communication and organization skills;
  • Personal initiative, curiosity, and the respect for differences in a multicultural environment.

Language requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Serbian (written and oral).

Selected applicants must provide the internship application, two letters of recommendation, proof of health insurance and school enrollment, passport, and visa (if applicable).

In addition to the above listed documentation, the successful candidate will be asked to provide, prior to commencing work, proof of medical insurance valid for Serbia. Applications not in accordance with the mandatory requirements will NOT be considered.

UN Women will only be able to respond to those applications in which there is further interest.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

UN Women Internship Policy:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year;
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
