UN Women Background:

 

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

 

UN Women Multi-Country Office (MCO) for the Maghreb works in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, and is based in Rabat, Morocco. UN Women Maghreb MCO focuses its activities on 3 areas of intervention:

  1. Women Political Participation (WPP) and Gender-Responsive Public Governance;
  2. Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) and Access to Decent and Stable Income;
  3. Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG).

 

UN Women Multi-Country Office (MCO) for the Maghreb is looking for an EVAWG Programme Intern for a 6-month period.

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities

 

Under the supervision of the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Programme Coordinator, the intern will:

 

  1. Provide substantive analysis of the legal, political and social environment
  • Produce thorough analysis and research of the political, social and economic situation in the country related to EVAWG developments and provide substantive inputs to the UN Women MCO programme planning in the area;
  • Provide comparative informed analysis of the situation in the three Maghreb countries;
  • Monitor continuously and analyze country’s developments;
  • Produce and/or update briefs on the main thematics related to EVAWG.
  1. Support the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of EVAWG projects and programmes
  • Support the EVAWG Unit in the monitoring of programmes’ implementation and on informing the reporting processes to donors, regional office, and headquarters;
  • Support the planning, organization and follow-up of programmes’ activities;
  • Support the efficient coordination of partners from institutions, civil society organizations, the UN system, the media and the private sector;
  • Support the team in preparing high-level events, consultations, and other national and regional events.
  1. Advocacy support and facilitation of knowledge building and management
  • Identify, synthesize and share research on good practices and lessons learned successful interventions related to EVAWG in the Maghreb countries and globally;
  • Proactively support the design and implementation of high-impact advocacy activities and campaigns with key partners, with a special focus on the 16 days against gender-based violence campaign;
  • Contribute to knowledge networks and communities of practice and to UN Women MCO communication tools and platforms.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Familiarity with the UN system structure, organization and goals of UN Women strategies in country;
  • Operational and ‘hands-on’ experience in all substantive aspects of development management and programming within UN Women;
  • In-depth knowledge of the principle gender issues affecting women in the country of assignment, with a special focus on the EVAWG thematic;
  • In-depth first-hand knowledge of UN Women’s corporate strategies and innovative approaches to advance gender equality and women’s rights;
  • In-depth knowledge of international norms and mechanisms on women’s rights.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

 

  • The intern must have studies International Law, International Relations or Political Sciences, International development, Gender and development, Social development, or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have post-graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of post-graduation.

 

Language:

 

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in French and working knowledge of English are required;
  • Working knowledge of Arabic a distinct advantage.

 

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Note:

 

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment

 

UN Women Internship Policy:

 

1.) Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

 

(a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b)    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

(c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

 

2.) UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

 

3.) All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;

 

4.) UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

 

5.) The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

 

6.) Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;

 

7.) The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application
