Background

The UNDP Oslo Governance Centre (OGC) is UNDP’s Global Policy Centre for policy development and applied research with an overarching focus on democratic governance and peacebuilding in crisis, conflict and transitional contexts. The Oslo Governance Centre sits within the Governance and Peacebuilding Cluster, Bureau for Policy and Programme Support. It engages with Norwegian, Nordic and other partners from the South in undertaking applied research and developing policy options and tools for governance support in transitional environments, in order to find practical solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Scope of work:

The Oslo Governance is looking for an editor who can do a line and copy edit of the social cohesion paper OGC had commissioned as a background paper for the “Pathways for Peace: Inclusive Approaches to Preventing Violent Conflict” (2018).  This paper is called the Preventing Deadly Conflict in Ethnically Fractured Societies:  An Overview and Analysis of International Development Assistance for ‘Bridging’ Social Cohesion”[1].  In 2018 UNDP will be publishing global guidance on social cohesion programming and the background paper, with its focus on social cohesion literature and analysis is expected to serve as a complementary resource to this guidance.

The IC is expected to:

  • Restructure (where required) and do a line and copy edit of the existing paper to turn it into a shorter background  paper to accompany a guidance note on social cohesion for practitioners
  • Draft and/or edit in places to ensure clarity, consistency and readability of the text for the intended audience (conflict prevention programming practitioners);
  • Under the guidance of the OGC advisor , assemble all chapters/sections;  adding/editing boxes of interest, tables and charts bringing the text to full completion including all necessary components (table of contents, foreword, preface, introduction, bibliography, tables, annexes, boxes, etc.);
  • Point out factual inconsistencies, inconsistencies in arguments,  faulty logic, and awkward or unclear passages and suggest solutions;
  • Ensure all references are in order, requesting source information for tables and figures when such information is missing and ensure reference conformance with the UNDP style rules;
  • Proof-read final texts as laid out to ensure text and associated graphics are error free.

Deliverables

  • Guarantee delivery of a fully edited and formatted first draft document within 3 working days of being contracted for this assignment.
  • Guarantee delivery of a final draft document that incorporates comments received (1 working day)

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Advanced university degree or equivalent in media studies, journalism, or related disciplines.

Professional experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a writer/editor producing/editing relevant publications and products;
  • Demonstrated experience of working on organising and structuring information.
  • Experience in writing for media outlets, development-related organizations, research centres, think-tanks or multilateral institutions required;
  • Proven record in advanced copy editing and/or producing knowledge in the area of conflict prevention and/or democratic governance.

Language:                      

  • Fluency in English, both written and oral;

Institutional Arrangements:

The IC will be supervised by Oslo Governance Centre’s Policy Advisor.
