Background

UNDP promotes sustainable human development to help build resilient nations and to empower people to build better lives. As the UN's development network, UNDP has drawn on world-wide experience for over three decades to assist China both in developing solutions to its own ongoing development challenges, and in its south-south cooperation and engagement in global development. Domestically, our work focuses on Poverty Reduction, Good Governance, Energy & Environment, and Disaster Management. In UNDP’s Country Programme Document 2016-2020, UNDP position itself as a policy advisor to support China’s reform.

At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030. The new SDGs, and the broader sustainability agenda, addressing the root causes of poverty and the universal need for development that works for all people. China has been taking active actions to implement the SDGs, has issued the China’s National Plan on Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and also the “Development Plan of China’s Innovation Demonstration Zones for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, Which is the most concrete actions on localizing the SDGs so far. UNDP has been working closely with the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to promote this initiative together, serving as the SDGs expert and development partner to central and local governments, help identifying local development bottlenecks, pilot sustainable solutions, work with public and private sector partners, to build high quality SDGs implementation pilot zones, summarize experiences and successful models, and share in China and globally.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Participate and support the strategic design and on the ground implementation of various SDGs initiatives;

2. Monitor, summarize and brief SDGs implementation updates by other organizations/entities/governments in China and globally;

3. Coordinate and organize the promotion and maintenance of the SDGs MOOC (Massive Online Open Course);

4. Coordinate and support other SDGs training and promotion initiatives;

5. Communicate with Chinese and international experts on SDGs issues;

6. Participate the negotiation with potential partners, conduct research and analysis;

7. Organize events and coordinate internally and externally as needed;

8. Draft SDGs related documents in Chinese and English with fluency;

9. Coordinate with communications and many other internal teams to ensure work deliveries achieved smoothly;

10. Perform other duties as required.

Competencies

Under supervision of the Team Leader and SDGs Programme Manager of the Sustainable Development Unit, the SDGs intern will be the key member of the SDGs taskforce in UNDP China, involving the strategic design and on the ground implementation of various SDGs initiatives; closely monitor and analysis HQ and peer efforts in promoting SDGs at different levels; help multiple stakeholders in China better understand and implement the SDGs in the China context; communicate with prestigious Chinese and international experts in all areas of the 17 SDGs; participating the negotiation with public, private and academic partners; organizing multiple events on SDGs, draft and prepare documents and work with a highly professional and diversified experts and colleagues to make the world a much better place.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Taking responsibility and firm commitment to SDGs related work;
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent above) in development studies, public policy, economics, international development, law, or other social sciences. Advanced skills in international organizations, events organizing, research and analysis, and program management experience is preferable;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainable development, policy, and knowledge in one or some of the following domains (poverty and governance, energy, environment, economy, sustainable city, climate change, public-private partnership);
  • Sufficient analytical skills and ability to conduct basic research with analysis;
  • Respect deadlines, results based, can work under high pressure and fast pace;
  • Resilient, flexible, quick response, fast learner, good at multi-tasking;
  • Take pride working at UNDP, passionate to make a difference;
  • Excellent communication skills, including speak and write clearly and effectively, listen to others, correctly interpret messages from others, team player.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint;
  • Advanced command of English and Chinese.
  • Can work full time for minimal 6 months.

Working Arrangement:

  • UNDP will provide working space and office facilities for this internship;
  • UNDP will provide certificate stating the period of internship and the name of the department or office to which the intern was assigned;
  • This is a full time internship, no financial remunerations will be granted for this internship.
