Background

With the increase in China’s role in global development, the SSGDC’s workload at the UNDP China Country Office has significantly increased. The intern will be exposed to various developmental issues, particularly on South-South cooperation, and use his or her abilities to perform a range of tasks (more detail below), both analytical and administrative. The intern will be mainly supporting the partnership function of the team, under the direct supervision of the Government Relations Officer. The intern will also be exposed and expected to support other functions and colleagues in the team on a needs basis.

The intern should have direct relevant academic and/or professional experience (including, but not limited to international relations, development, diplomacy, economics etc.), be innovative, self-motivated, and result-oriented, and comply with the rules and regulations of the organization and the team. The internship duration and hours may be flexible in order to fit the team’s work plan as well as the schedule of the most outstanding candidate.

 

The intern will together with Supervisor devise a flexible work plan to guide the internship. A check-in’ meeting between the intern and Supervisor will be scheduled at the mid-term of the internship, to ensure that the work plan is on track and to modify tasks as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Data collection, follow up and analysis on international development and South-South cooperation related issues
  • Research, analysis and support to UNDP management and programme teams on SSC issues
  • Facilitation of knowledge building on SSC issues, including translation of documents from Chinese to English and English to Chinese
  • Preparation of briefs and reports for a range of audiences, including senior management, on specific topics with emphasis on SSC issues
  • Assisting in the organization of meetings, events and seminars, and taking notes for the team when requested
  • Other duties as assigned, including cross team administrative tasks when required
  • Duration: 6 months.

Competencies

  • By the end of the internship, the intern is expected to have increased her/his knowledge of UNDP’s activities and mandate, particularly in the field of South-South cooperation.
  • To have successfully helped strengthened the partnership function of the team (with a particular focus on South-South Cooperation) to reach its working goals.
  • Successfully compiled and distributed the monthly China in the World newsletter.
  • Produced or contributed in the production of knowledge products, such as policy papers.
  • Ensured adequate logistic and secretariat support to meetings, events and similar.
  • Devise a brief Internship Report at the end of the internship, including a Handover Note.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Language Requirements:

We are looking for an intern who is a Chinese National, fluent in Putonghua and English, both written and spoken. He or she is enrolled in a Master’s level degree; preferably with a focus in international development, although this is not essential.
