The Strategic Partnership Division (SPD) is responsible for proactively driving the strategic positioning of UN Women so that the size, sources and predictability of its resources help the organization achieve its strategic goals. SPD is organized into three branches: Resource Mobilization, Civil Society, and Communications and Advocacy.

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Digital & Interactive Media Specialist, the intern will assist the Communications Section in the research, fact checking, writing, storyboarding, production, animation, illustration and design of visual and interactive communications assets, primarily for online distribution. The following provides a workplan with tasks and responsibilities for the duration of the Internship.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Digital & Interactive Media Specialist, the intern will be responsible for supporting the following tasks:

Support research for visual and interactive information products, campaigns or initiatives on women’s rights and gender equality. Research can range from fact checking and analyzing data for infographics to multimedia research for interactive timelines.
Support the scripting and writing of interactive or visual content, such as infographics, explainers, timelines, etc
Pitch, write, storyboard, wireframe and produce visual stories or explainers, primarily for online distribution.
Illustrate, animate and design visual assets for multiple mediums (website, print, social media, out-of-home media)
Update existing visual assets (e.g. infographics, gifs, data cards, etc), including for different languages (primarily in English, Spanish and French) and mediums.

Other tasks

Support digital and visual communications strategy research
Conduct user testing across browsers and devices for interactive content
Support inputs for UN Women’s quarterly and yearly analytics report

Required Skills and Experience

Must be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor or Masters degree programme, or be a recent graduate (in the last one year).
Must have valid work permission for the United States of America.
Fluent in English; Spanish and/or French are a plus.
Experience and/or education in information design, graphic design, animation, illustration, motion graphics, visual storytelling, data journalism and/or journalism
Experience in fact-checking, analyzing data and scripting content for visual communications and design
Sound editorial judgment
Fluency with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
Experience using third-party web technologies to create information products, such as graphs and charts. e.g. Tableau, Infogram
Knowledge of HTML5 / CSS, JavaScript, jQuery and or programming libraries for data visualization, such as d3.js, a plus
Passion for visual storytelling and women’s rights
Curiosity for new technologies and testing new ideas

UN Women Internship Policy:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or;
Have graduated with a university degree (as above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year.
UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
