Background

The Island Life Magazine is an annual publication by UNDP Maldives which comprises of a collection of human-interest stories around UNDP’s initiatives, interviews with selected government and private sector representatives, fast facts and project briefs amongst others. Human-interest stories will be the primary focus of the publication that will aim to bring in the viewpoints of communities and individuals on how such initiatives had made positive impacts on their lives

The first issue Island Life Magazine published in 2016 focuses on Climate Change adaptation and local solution to development challenges in the Maldives by communities through UNDP support. The second issue focuses on the work UNDP is doing together with our partners to address development challenges and the third covers varying perspective from the Government, civil society, development partners and the private sector. The theme for this year’s issue is Climate Action in line with the recent UN Climate Action Summit 2019 calling for increased ambition and efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

The editor will deliver the following services to UNDP Maldives under the supervision of UNDP Communications Officer

  • Develop a timeline for Island Life Magazine content development
  • Information/Project details for the year 2019 will be provided to the editor from UNDP Maldives. Editor will creatively copy-write with a style that is passionate, persuasive to join causes and modern.
  • Provide UNDP with first draft for comments/feedback by agreed deadline
  • Ensure timely incorporation of feedback received from UNDP into draft.
  • Provide UNDP with second draft for comments/feedback by agreed deadline.
  • Ensure timely incorporation of feedback received from UNDP into final draft.
  • Edit draft foreword by UNDP Resident Representative
  • Ensure all references are in order, requesting source information for statistics, tables and figures when such information is missing
  • Proof-read final texts as laid out by designer to ensure text and associated graphics are in order, progress with a flow and is error free.

  • First draft of Island Life Magazine
  • Final draft of Island Life Magazine

 

DURATION

  • The consultant is expected to work 25 days over a period of 2.5 months

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • University degree in communications, journalism or development-related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an editor producing/editing relevant publications and products
  • Experience in editing materials for development-related organizations;
  • Experience with UNDP is an advantage
  • Proven record or writing and/or editing in the area of private

Language requirement

  • Fluent in English and Dhivehi.
