Background

This position is located within the UN Women Department of Management and Administration, the Security & Safety Services Section. The Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) Consultant reports directly to the UN Women Global OSH Manager. The role will be completed remotely, with no requirement for the consultant to travel, with all meetings facilitated remotely. The UN Women Security and Safety Services has completed an extensive collation of organizational OSH requirements which has led to the need to support the development of OSH products and processes.

Duties and Responsibilities

In line with the approved UN Women Security and Safety Services Annual Work Plan (AWP), organizational setting and available resources; the OSH Consultant whilst ensuring the continued promulgation of the UN Women mandate, will be responsible for the following:

  1. The OSH Consultant will coordinate with the Global OSH manager, Security and Safety Services Section and other elements of the organization, to review and evaluate the OSH requirements, organizational needs and realities.  Using this information, the consultant in consultation with the Global OSH Manager will design and develop specific OSH products and tools for the organisation.

Deliverables:

a. Coordinate and participate in meetings with the UN Women Security and Safety Services Section and Global OSH Manager.

b. Review the current UN Women OSH Strategy, Policy and organizational roles and responsibilities and develop terms of reference for the UN Women Occupational Safety and Health oversight body and OSH Focal Points.

c. Define and develop proposed OSH competencies, learning objectives and topics for an education/onboarding programme for UN Women OSH Focal Points and Managers based on their established roles and responsibilities.

d. Design and develop an OSH risk register that can be operationalized within an online platform.

e. Design and develop an OSH incident, accident and work-related disorder and disease reporting and analysis system that can be operationalized within an online platform encompassing all UN systemwide requirements.

f. Research and propose a realistic and effective mechanism for response to workplace incidents.

g. Review the UN ‘Minimum living and working standards in high risk environments’ and the UN ‘Mental Health Strategy’ and make practical and feasible recommendations and proposals of OSH related implementation.

h. As considerable variation exists in national standards related to OSH globally, identify best practice standards and guidelines for use within a UN Women OSH management system.

i. Complete and share with the UN Women Global OSH manager a report of findings and proposals on all deliverables.

Communication: possesses good communication and presentation skills across mediums necessary for the delivery of outputs, products and reports, including the ability to draft/edit in a clear concise style. Has experience with designing and developing OSH management systems.

Planning and organizing: is able to plan and organize work to meet imposed deadlines, conflicting priorities, changes in focus; working under pressure, using resources and time efficiently to ensure the completion of deliverables.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) combined with qualifying experience in the field of Occupational Health and Safety.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in designing, developing and managing Occupational Health and Safety. A knowledge of the UN would be desirable in a prospective consultant but not essential.

Languages

For the post advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.
