Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

2020 is a pivotal year for gender equality. 25 years ago, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was endorsed by 189 governments at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, and powered by the 21st century women’s movement. It is the most visionary agenda for the human rights of women and girls, everywhere.

On the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, UN Women’s “Generation Equality: Realizing women’s rights for an equal future” campaign demands equal pay, equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, an end to sexual harassment and violence against women and girls, health care services that respond to their needs, and their equal participation in political life and in decision-making in all areas of life.

Unit/ Project Background:

Communications is a key component of UN Women’s work in the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region and constitutes a vehicle for ensuring visibility for successful UN Women initiatives, results and programmes as well as for raising awareness about key issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment. New digital media have brought about dramatic changes in the ways people consume information and interact. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
